The road to journalism began on November 1, 2010. Thomas Brennan was a Marine Infantryman in the Helmand Province of Afghanistan. He says it was the worst day of his life – a rocket propelled grenade took down four Marines, Brennan among them.
A year later and in the process of medical retirement, the photos an embedded journalist took of that day were crucial to Thomas’s recovery.
Wrestling with the loss, Brennan had little recollection of the events, and having difficulty expressing in speech, he picked up a journal and began to write. An acquaintance at the New York Times agreed to help Thomas polish his grammar. But three hours later was asking if they could publish his story.
That was 2011.
Inspired by the stories from WWII veterans and seeking a new call to service, Brennan founded non-profit The War Horse in 2015 with a $50,000 Kickstarter campaign. Today The War Horse boasts a growing staff and a reputation for serious investigative reporting.
And they are master storytellers, refreshing in a day when most for-profit journalism is sensationalized opinion disguised as news.
