Sultan Camp – Veteran and Military Spouse Recruiter for Newport News Shipbuilding
Sultan Camp joins the VeteranCrowd podcast to share the value of hiring veterans and military spouses. He is the Veteran and Military Spouse Programs Leader for Newport News Shipbuilding, a Division of Huntington Ingalls. It is the nation’s “only industrial designer, builder and re-fueler of Nuclear-Powered Aircraft Carriers and one of only two shipyards capable of designing and building Nuclear-Powered Submarines”.
Navy Career
He spent his first career serving in the Navy. What started out as an attempt to join the Army, a late recruiter caused him to head to the neighboring Navy recruiter’s office. Sultan was a sonar technician. He says, “My time in the Navy was a complete blast”. It set him up with the leadership skills and disciplines needed to be successful in any job after his service.
Recruiting Veterans & Military Spouses
He actively recruits veterans and military spouses to work at the Newport News Shipbuilding facility. Huntington Ingalls has a commitment from the top that makes the company military and veteran friendly. It won recognition from Military Times as one of the nation’s best places to work for veterans. Sultan knows the deep network of military spouses. It is this network that allows the shipyard the confidence they need to hire a military spouse. They know that the military spouses’ network can often fill their position before they even leave it vacant.
