Julie Cane & Rick Rikoski – Promoting Democracy Through Impact Investing
Rick Rikoski and Julie Cane are partners of Democracy Investments. Julie began her career as a U.S. Naval Aviator flying the SH-3 Sea King helicopter. She has over 20 years of experience in financial services. As a Captain in the California State Guard, Julie continues to serve. She does this in addition to being the CEO of Democracy Investments. Rick is the chief economist at Democracy Investments and also the chief scientist at Hadal. Hadal is a marine robotics company, which he co-founded in 2009. Having spent over 20 years developing probabilistic algorithms, Rick was well prepared to implement the Economist’s Democracy Index for financial products.
Democracy Investments
Democracy Investments is a “mission-driven asset manager”. It was formed because of the “frustration with the global rise of authoritarianism and the financial vehicles that passively invest in authoritarian countries”. A discussion between Rick and Julie about ways to help shift capital away from authoritarians sparked the idea for founding Democracy Investments. During the pandemic, Rick was already using the Economist’s Democracy Index for modeling coronavirus and thought why don’t they use that as an overlay for weighting democracy in the investment world. They launched Democracy Investments in 2020.
